Protecting What Matters Most: A Visit to Cosley Zoo

At Reliable Fire & Security, we talk a lot about life safety. It’s at the heart of everything we do. But every so often, we’re reminded in the most unexpected, beautiful ways why our work truly matters.

Recently, our team had the opportunity to visit Cosley Zoo in Wheaton, Illinois—a five-acre, community-loved zoo that’s been inspiring conservation and connection for over 50 years. From the moment we walked through the gates, it was clear: this place is something special.

Children’s laughter echoed through the paths. Families gathered around the animal exhibits. Zookeepers were hard at work caring for everything from native Illinois turtles to farm animals and bobcats. It wasn’t just a zoo—it was a space filled with learning, wonder, and joy. You could feel the love and dedication in every corner.

Cosley Zoo’s mission is “to create connections between people and animals that will inspire lifelong conservation of the natural world.” And it shows. They don’t just display animals—they educate, protect, and invite the community to play a part in caring for the environment. It’s also a certified sensory-inclusive facility, making sure everyone feels welcome.

As we watched the staff in action and walked the same paths their visitors do each day, we felt proud—not just because they’re a Reliable partner, but because this is exactly what fuels our purpose. Protecting buildings and systems is one thing. But protecting places like this—places where memories are made, values are shaped, and futures are inspired—is everything.

It reminded us that our work isn’t about wires or alarms. It’s about people. It’s about animals. It’s about community. It’s about preserving something meaningful and magical for generations to come.

We’re honored to support Cosley Zoo and everything they stand for. And we hope, in our own way, we’re helping make sure that places like this continue to thrive safely—for the children who visit today, and the ones still to come.

If you haven’t been to Cosley Zoo, consider planning a visit. It just might remind you, too, of what’s really worth protecting.

An Ounce of Prevention…

Fire Prevention Week

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” represents the final year of our three-year effort to educate the public about basic but essential elements of smoke alarm safety.

Why focus on smoke alarms three years in a row? Because NFPA’s survey data shows that the public has many misconceptions about smoke alarms, which may put them at increased risk in the event of a home fire. For example, only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are, or how often they need to be replaced.

As a result of those and related findings, we’re addressing smoke alarm replacement this year with a focus on these key messages:

  • Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
  • Make sure you know how old all the smoke alarms are in your home.
  • To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm; the alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date.
